Degrees of Freedom
Finally it looks like the summer is coming to an end, since classes at UW start tomorrow. On Tuesday I am teaching for the first time; the class is CO 456, Introduction to Game Theory. 1000 km away, Lauren is also teaching: she’s been assigned to two sections of a Spanish class at UMass Amherst. One thing that I am looking forward to is that Game Theory is a balance between mathematical formalism and the “is this model really accurate”-factor; in other words, we won’t spend 2 weeks developing a single proof, but rather we’ll be spending our time looking at as many possible models and concepts as time allows.
In other news, I have made it to the 3rd round of this year’s TopCoder Collegiate Challenge, which has netted me a t-shirt, stress ball, and water bottle, as well as $75. The people who survive the next two elimination rounds get to go to Disney World! That’s a practical incentive to practice theoretical computer science if I ever heard one… Back to the first item of the post; it’s time for me to put together the first homework of the term!
